Tekieh is to stop (mute) the vibrating string of a note for a brief moment, right before the next note comes in. When performed, it looks like playing a very short ornament before playing the next note; but the ornament itself should not sound as a grace note. This technique aims to imitate what singers do when cutting a note in the throat, which separates two successive notes from one another. On a string instrument like Oud, Tekieh is performed with just touching the string on the fingerboard with the next finger or a note higher.
